In light of Architect@Work Luxembourg and our new custom carpet design service, we collaborated with Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz to create a timeless yet captivating carpet design. We met at his studio in Brussels to talk about the design process.

In a predominantly white and well-lit studio in the outer edge of Brussels, Belgian furniture and lighting designer Sylvain Willenz creates his timeless pieces. It’s also the place where his custom design for modulyss came into fruition. His interest in textiles was what led him to collaborate with the brand: “I chose to collaborate with modulyss because my work encompasses both 2D and 3D dimensions. This partnership presented the perfect opportunity to explore something innovative, leveraging the cutting-edge technology of the chromojet.”

In terms of the design process, Willenz had a very hands-on approach which started by visiting the modulyss site to better understand the manufacturing process and to see the chromojet at work. “I was very much inspired by the versatility of the chromojet process and its endless possibilities. That’s how I knew that we could really push this technique by creating a design that’s both complex and organic ”, he adds.

For the design the Belgian designer was inspired by patterns you can find in nature, specifically the structure of wood: “We also found inspiration in the infinity of the jungle which, when shot from above, is composed of a repetition of lines.” For the colours, Sylvain remained in a consistent mindset: “We chose for organic and toned down hues and added some degrades and fades to craft this natural and organic atmosphere.” The contrast of lighter areas and darker areas highlights the smooth and organic transitions that can also be found in nature. The rich and vibrant yet subtle pattern makes this design a passe-partout that adds an element of sophistication and biophilia to every environment.
