Neuro-Inclusive Haven for the Kids at Carden Nursery School

In November 2023, we launched our charity project with the focus on neuro-inclusive design. By way of competition, architects and designers all over the UK could participate and win the project to redesign one of Carden Nursery & Primary School’s sensory classrooms. The assignment was clear: redesign a classroom tailored specifically to the needs of neurodiverse children. After nearly a year of dedication and collaboration, the redesigned classroom is complete and ready to welcome the children.

The Vision: Designing with Purpose

The classroom redesign project was more than just a charitable initiative, it was a call to action for the design community. We challenged architects and designers to rethink traditional educational spaces and consider the unique needs of neurodiverse children. This project was a partnership with Carden Nursery and Primary School in Brighton, where the winning design has been brought to life.

The competition drew an incredible array of ideas, but it was the design by Elizabeth Loizou and Lucy Rees from Tétris Design & Build that truly stood out. Their concept was a thoughtful interpretation of what a neuro-inclusive space should be: safe, sensory-friendly, and welcoming to all.

The classroom is divided into three zones with fluid boundaries, each carefully crafted to engage the Five Senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. The designers prioritised neutral colours to create a calming atmosphere, while soft, accessible materials ensure safety and comfort. Their use of rounded zoning and natural elements not only enhances the aesthetic but also supports the wellbeing of the children.

Why Neuro-Inclusive Design Matters

At the heart of this project is a simple yet powerful message: designing for neuro-inclusivity is not just important, it’s essential. Spaces like classrooms should be welcoming to all, accommodating the diverse needs of every child, particularly those who are neurodiverse.

We are incredibly proud of the final result and grateful to all who participated in this initiative. Special thanks go to IFlor for expertly installing our modulyss carpet tiles on behalf of Tétris Design & Build. The classroom at Carden Nursery and Primary School is now a testament to what can be achieved when we design with inclusivity in mind.
