We summarised the most important installation guidelines below. Following these tips, installing your carpet tiles can’t go wrong. For more detailed information, download our full carpet tile installation guide.
Prepare for Installation
Store, acclimatise, inspect
If you are not installing your carpet tiles immediately, store them in a closed room where the temperature is between 18°C and 28°C. To guarantee an even result, use tiles from the same dye lot in the same room. Before starting the installation, always inspect the supplied material for visual defects.
Prepare your subfloor
To avoid damage, postpone the installation of the tiles until all other works in the space are finished.
- First, identify the subfloor type and its condition. modulyss carpet tiles can be installed on any subfloor that is dry, clean, grease-free, firm, stable and flat, including cement-based and wooden floors. A carpet (underlay) cannot be used as a subfloor, because it does not have the right properties.
- If the subfloor is highly absorbent, apply a primer first.
- Remove traces from previous floor coverings or adhesive residues.
- Make sure cracks, tears or irregularities in the subfloor are patched and levelled.
- The ambient temperature should be between 18°C and 28°C and the subfloor should have a minimum temperature of 18°C. The relative humidity should be between 30% and 65%.
- If applicable, make sure your underfloor heating system is switched off at least 24 hours before the installation.
Install Your Carpet Tiles
No glue needed
modulyss carpet tiles weigh more than 3.5 kg/m2* and therefore, they do not need permanent gluing. We do recommend using anti-slip, semi-permanent tackifier or self-adhesive tabs. These types of carpet tile adhesives form a film on the subfloor after application and drying, which makes the tiles easy to remove.
Measure and plan
Draw at least two perpendicular chalk lines on the floor as visual guides. These chalk lines must extend over the entire length and width. Measure the room dimensions to find the best starting point for a maximum size perimeter tile. Do not work with full tiles directly up to the wall because no wall is perfectly straight.
Cutting the tiles
In most cases, to finish the room, you will have to cut carpet tiles to fit. Use a suitable floor cutting knife to cut the tiles from the back. You can reuse the cutting residue in the same room, placing the uncut side against the adjacent tile.
* Except carpet tiles with an ecoBACK PLUS backing which weigh between 2 and 3,5 kg/m².
Choose the right installation method
Check the technical datasheet to see the recommended installation method for your selected carpet tile collection. Different guidelines apply for cut pile, tip-sheared and minituft carpet tiles. Download our full installation guide for more details.
You can follow different installation patterns or methods:
- Monolithic: the carpet tiles are laid in the same direction to create a uniform floor covering.
- Quarter turn: the arrow on the back of the carpet tile is alternately turned 90°.
- Brick: all arrows point the same way, but each tile is moved half a row horizontally, so the 4 corners don't align.
- Ashlar: all arrows point in the same way, but each tile is moved half a row vertically, so the 4 corner points never align.
- Random: the tiles are placed randomly without any recurring pattern.
- Herringbone: planks are laid in a V-shaped/zigzag arrangement, or in an alternating diagonal pattern.
